K-Type instruments, such as the Gavin K File, are the oldest instruments used to shape dentin as files and reamers. It is formed by twisting square or triangular cross-section wire. K-Type reamers have fewer cutting edges than files and the angle between them is between 10 ̊-30 ̊. This instrument is used by making a quarter turn clockwise and pulling it back. The core diameter of each root canal instrument affects its flexibility and fracture resistance, and they remove debris in direct proportion to the core diameter.

The number of spirals of K-Type files is twice that of reamers. The angle between the grooves along their long axes is between 25 ̊- 40 ̊. Therefore, like reamers, they are designed to be used primarily in a rotary motion. Especially in curved canals K-Type file It is recommended to use the reamers one after the other.

Various studies show that classical K-Type files cause a flattening of the coronary inner curvature, where there is zip and curvature in the apical outer curvature. Perforations have also been frequently diagnosed. The use of K-type files is recommended due to their good cutting ability and flexibility. Despite sufficient flexibility, apical expansion of more than 40 points is not recommended in curved canals.

It consists of spiral shaped blades. These frequent spirals increase flexibility. It is used with a quarter turn (90) rotation clockwise and counterclockwise. It is not recommended to use it in a back and forth motion in curved channels. In general, it is widely used for straightening and widening the channels.

Features;

  • It is used with both rotating reaming and filing filling movements,
  • It can be rotated both clockwise and counterclockwise,
  • It is the most frequently produced and preferred root canal tool,
  • Its symbol is square, it is obtained from a square cross-section wire,
  • The number of spirals is much higher and denser than the Reamer type file.
